Both the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Commanders want to compete for Super Bowls. To do that, they need all their star players, such as Trey Hendrickson and Terry McLaurin, respectively, to practice at training camps.

These camps are not just a tool to get players into shape. Their true purpose is to get everyone on the same page and work to fix problems and install variations of their game plans.

With Trey Hendrickson and McLaurin out for their respective teams, they will struggle to get the most out of their practices. Both the players are holding out as they are forcing their respective franchises’ hands at the negotiating table.

The star pass rusher is looking for guarantees along with a significant pay raise, whereas the wideout is looking for a long-term deal that will justify his consistent performances so far.

Their efforts to pressure their front offices might be working, but teams are not the ones to be without safeguards. They levy fines on players who miss OTAs, training camps, and practices. It seems those fines seem to have become a tad too much for these two veteran stars to digest.

Trey Hendrickson is planning to report to Bengals camp Wednesday, ending his holdout without being any closer to a new deal, per sources. Reporting to camp stops the $50,000 per day fines and also serves as a good-faith gesture to try to jumpstart negotiations.

Adam Schefter revealed on X

This was a clear indication that Trey Hendrickson does not want to keep missing out on $50,000 per day. After initially moving to Florida, he is set to report to camp as he wants to continue contract discussions.

Terry McLaurin reports to camp after losing $800K in fines

Adam Schefter also confirmed that 29-year-old Terry McLaurin has reported back to the Washington Commanders. He, too, was being fined $50,000 a day, a lot of money for any person.

The wide receiver has been vocal about the frustrations in trying to negotiate a long-term deal that justifies his steady production as well as team leadership. Aside from expressing his feelings, he has also skipped all practices so far.

Those tactics may have led fans and reporters to pile the pressure on the Commanders’ front office. But it has also cost the Ohio State alum a pretty penny. Reports suggest he has lost around $800,000 in fines.

McLaurin is due to earn $15.5 million as a base salary this season. He is also set to receive $2.8 million as a roster bonus and $500,000 in workout bonuses. He might have to negotiate a way to make up for the what he has lost in fines so far.

Trey Hendrickson and Terry McLaurin following Micah Parsons’ lead

Trey Hendrickson and Terry McLaurin, returning to their respective training camps, will be a sigh of relief for their fans. However, neither is going to work out or practice with their teammates.

Reporting at their camps was just a tool to avoid losing money in fines. It is also a method to shift the onus onto their front offices to draw up their new contracts as fast as possible.

They might be following Micah Parsons‘ approach. It is not as if other players have not used this tactic, but Parsons’ presence at Dallas Cowboys practices has led to owner Jerry Jones breaking a sweat.

It is easier to handle a player holdout if the said athlete is at home. But when they are in the presence of their teammates, coaches, as well as reporters, the situation can become increasingly complicated.

Jones has had to bark back at reporters and fans ever since Parsons made it clear it was on the Cowboys for not offering him his new contract. Maybe McLaurin and Hendrickson’s presence could lead to a similar situation.
