Devin Haney was expected to be the new Floyd Mayweather of the current generation. This is because he had remained undefeated throughout his illustrious professional career, with 31 wins and 15 KOs. However, this ended when the former undisputed lightweight champion lost for the first time against Ryan Garcia. Furthermore, after the loss, Haney’s father, Bill Haney, and Mayweather got into a heated confrontation. 

Several times in the past, Haney’s father has claimed that Floyd Mayweather‘s era is gone and that it is now Haney’s era. These comments tried to put forth the narrative that Haney is going to be the next best undefeated pound-for-pound boxer. Bill has also directed a lot of hate and criticism towards Mayweather, which prompted the boxing legend to confront him during Bill’s Instagram live. During their heated confrontation, Mayweather asked Bill if he needed his help and stated: 

You needed some help with your son the other night.

Mayweather directly asked Bill if he had a problem with him and mentioned that he respects him personally. Haney’s father responded by stating that Mayweather is not his enemy. However, after that, he went into an explosive rant about Mayweather. Bill also brought up his sparring session with his son while dissing him.

This continued for some time, and Bill even dismissed Mayweather’s undefeated record by claiming that he fought against no one significant.

Devin Haney will take a break from boxing 

Following his loss to Garcia on April 20, Haney’s father, Bill, announced that his son would be taking a break from boxing for a while. The highly anticipated fight took place at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and ended with KingRy winning via majority decision.

Ryan Garcia’s social media presence during fight week was a source of concern for many fans. The boxer’s posts were erratic, as was the fact that he missed weight by more than three pounds. Hence, the surprising outcome stunned the world and even the Haneys. Furthermore, during his Instagram Live, Bill stated: 

Devin is taking a break; you know what the Haneys are doing.

Haney is not retiring from the sport but rather taking some time off to recuperate. Bill also stated that they plan on building their way back to the top. In addition, since Haney is still the WBC super-lightweight champion, he will have to make a mandatory defense after his loss, eventually.
