Andre Onana Transfer: Arsenal closing in on signing Ajax keeper despite his ongoing football ban

Arsenal are interested on signing Ajax goalkeeper, Andre Onana this summer to shore up their goalkeeping resources. Onana is currently serving a 1-year ban from football for doping violations in February.

Arsenal are looking to cash in on the football ban and sign him for a lower fee of around £7million this summer. Onana has appealed his ban and the case will be heard on Wednesday, but the Gunners are interested in the player irrespective of the court verdict.

Onana was banned from football for 12 months in February after the banned substance furosemide had been found in his urine sample. The player has maintained it was a human error and he mistook it for his wife’s predicted prescription for aspirin.

The Cameroon international was valued at £25m last summer amid interest from Chelsea. He was considered one of the best young goalkeepers around, before his football ban.

The 25-year-old has kept 83 clean sheets in 204 appearances for Ajax and played a key role in their run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019, but his deal with the Eredivisie champions expires in 12 months’ time.

Arsenal were interested in signing Brentford keeper David Raya, but their promotion into the Premier League next season has forced them to look beyond the Bees’ keeper.

Brighton goalkeeper, Matt Ryan will leave the club at the end of this summer after his 6-month loan deal expires and Arsenal are keen to shore up their goalkeeping stocks ahead of next season. A large section of insiders in the club believe their current No.1 Bernd Leno might leave this summer, and if that is actually the case, then the transfer looks a great move for the Gunners.
