FC Barcelona is one of the most widely supported teams in the world, and the club has one of the largest social media followings in the world among sports teams. They have won a record 77 trophies domestically and 22 European and worldwide titles. The Blaugranas, along with their fierce rivals Real Madrid, are considered two of the best clubs in the world, and matches between the two teams are referred to as El Clásico.
The club has become a symbol of Catalan culture. Barcelona players have won a record twelve Ballon d’Or awards. It is one of three founding members of the Primera División that have never been relegated from the top division since its inception in 1929, along with Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid.
Who owns FC Barcelona?
FC Barcelona is owned by its registered members and supporters and does not follow the private models of ownership followed by many clubs in the Premier League. Like a few other clubs in Spain, Barcelona follows the ‘socio’ system of ownership and is entirely owned by the fans of the club. Barcelona’s model of ownership has been largely successful for most of its history but has been prone to mismanagement by the board of directors on several occasions in the past.

Barcelona’s registered members are in charge of electing the board of directors and the president of the club. Each president has a mandated term of six years at the club. Barcelona was established by Joan Gamper in 1899 and has been a registered association throughout its history.
The price of the Barcelona membership is €185 a year for an adult. It is €92 for a child and €44 for an infant under six. In the event that a fan does not have a family member who is a member of the club and does not meet the requirements, they can apply for a commitment card.
After holding a commitment card for a period of three years, an individual can then apply to become a full member of Barcelona. The annual fee for a commitment card is €144, meaning a fan will have to invest at least €432 before they can even apply for full membership. In some extraordinary cases, the Barcelona board can grant membership whenever it deems such an exception appropriate.

FC Barcelona previous owners
Joan Gamper is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the amateur beginnings of FC Barcelona, being the fundamental head behind the foundation of the club in 1899, and then serving as the club’s first captain between 1899 and 1903, netting over 100 goals in just 48 matches for Barça. He then served as its president on five separate occasions between 1908 and 1925.

After previous disappointments, the combination of a new young president, Joan Laporta, and a young new manager, former Dutch and Milan star Frank Rijkaard, saw the club bounce back. On the field, an influx of international players combined with homegrown Spanish players led to the club’s return to success. During his first tenure as president of FC Barcelona, they set a new record for trophies won in a 12-month period, winning 6 in 2009. After departing in 2010, he was re-elected as club president in 2021.
The Josef Bartomeu era constituted the deadliest trio in football history namely Messi, Suarez and Neymar. Rising dissatisfaction among supporters due to worsening finances and decline on the pitch in the previous seasons led to Josep Maria Bartomeu announcing his resignation as president on 27 October 2020 to avoid facing a vote of no confidence from the club members.
