Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski irks transfer rumours as he remains “open-minded” about his future
“I’ll stay open!" says Robert Lewandowski when asked about his future
Robert Lewandowski says he is “open-minded” about his future amid speculation from Premier League as he could seek to move on from Bayern Munich next season.
Just over a week after breaking Gerd Muller’s Bundesliga scoring record for Bayern Munich, Robert Lewandowski joined up with the Polish national team in Opalencia in Nowy Tomyśl County, Poland for their training camp ahead of the European Championships. in In his recent interview Lewandowski disclosed that he doesn’t want to completely rule anything out despite having a contract at Bayern until 2023 but insists he is happy in Germany and therefore unlikely to actively push for a move.
“I’ll stay open!” says Robert Lewandowski when asked about his future
In a recent interview with French television outlet Canal+ at Poland’s training camp, Lewandowski said that he was keeping his options open as far as his future is concerned. Lewandowski still has a contract at Bayern until June 2023, but he doesn’t want to keep anything off the table.
“I’ll stay open! I like to learn new languages and cultures. But even I don’t know whether that will happen in football or after my career. I feel good at Bavaria, the city is great and the club is great,” the prolific Polish striker explained.
Even before this record-breaking season, Lewandowski was one of the, if not the, most sought after strikers in Europe and his achievements for Bayern this season have a bevy of clubs queuing up to get the chance to convince him to leave Bavaria, with multiple suitors in Italy, Spain and England rumoured to be interested.
Bayern’s front office have ruled out any possibility of a potential transfer for Lewandowski this summer, remaining adamant he will see out the rest of his contract with the club. However, he had questioned Bayern’s transfer strategy on multiple occasions, including before the start of this past season. He has big ambitions of wanting to win the Champions League again, so he was critical of Hasan Salihamidzic’s strategies in the transfer market just after the pandemic.
At 32 years of age, the next contract Lewandowski signs will be the last big one of his playing career, so Zahavi is eager to have a meeting with Bayern’s front office to discussions their options. Bayern don’t want to let him go prior to 2023 but Zahavi clearly has other ideas for his client. His dream move had always been Real Madrid, but there have also been links with Chelsea earlier this month.
Lewandowski missed both legs against the French champions with a knee injury and admits he found it a tough watch from the sidelines.
“Against PSG, the pain was great,” said Lewandowski when asked about the Champions League exit. “You feel such helplessness, such weakness, the inability to help your teammates win the game. This helplessness bothers me.
“I think if I had been on the pitch maybe things would have turned out differently. But there is nothing I can do about it. Personally, it was difficult to accept this loss. We could have beaten them easily and moved on to the next round.”
When asked about his thoughts on breaking Gerd Muller’s record of most goals in a Bundesliga season, Lewandowski said such achievements are not what drives him, though he does take great pride at breaking a record he thought no-one would ever come close to achieving.
“I am not obsessed with records. When I take on new challenges, I try to do what no one has ever done. Because it pushes me to move forward,” he said.
“For me if you do something you love, you can achieve goals you thought were impossible.
“To be honest, I thought no player could come close to that record. Especially since I didn’t play for several matches, I was injured for part of the season. And in reality, I don’t realize the magnitude of it. I don’t really feel it and maybe that’s a good thing.”
