Chelsea close to signing Saul Niguez on loan
A transfer move that generated a lot of suspense has finally transpired with Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez set to start his association with Chelsea FC on loan. The 26-year-old will arrive at Stamford Bridge with a final confirmation of his permanent stay still not clear.
Manchester United was the other club that was also in the race but the Blues had the last laugh before the end of the transfer window. Niguez was told by Atletico Madrid that he was free to leave the club. It was a tight race between two of the biggest and renowned clubs in English football but the midfielder chose Chelsea FC as his preferred choice.
Although the terms of the loan agreement were sorted out by the club as well as the player there is no official confirmation to buy the midfielder on a permanent basis. The final decision would rest on the shoulders of Chelsea FC club bosses but as per sources, Atletico Madrid could include an obligation clause to buy the midfielder for 40 million pounds. Niguez is satisfied with Chelsea higher-ups with the way things have gone till now as far as the terms of the agreement are concerned.
Earlier Atletico Madrid was involved in a swap deal with Barcelona FC for Saul Niguez in return for Antoine Griezmann but the deal couldn’t materialize. It looks as if Chelsea wants to spruce up its midfield in order to provide enough options in an already competitive field consisting of N’ Golo Kante, Jorginho, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount. Recently, Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku’s arrival at Stamford Bridge has added cohesion to the forward line.
Thomas Tuchel wanted to add a midfielder who could have added an attacking flair which might have prompted him to sign Niguez’s. Meanwhile, Chelsea is also negotiating with Sevilla FC for defender Jules Kounde.
How would Saul Niguez’s presence benefit the Blues?
The 26-year-old is quick on the ball and can control the possession with his creative trickery. Niguez can be deployed as a central midfielder as well as an attacking midfielder. The midfielder is a box to box midfielder who has an eye for a goal. Niguez neat distribution and his ability to create gaps with his clever movements can come in handy.
Niguez has the ability to build attacks with his clever positioning and clever link-ups. His combination with midfielders N’Golo Kante and Jorginho would be crucial against defensively stronger outfits while his collusion with striker Lukaku would be crucial during open play.
Manager Tuchel mostly uses a 3-4-2-1 or a 3-4-1-2 formation that would enable Niguez to play his natural offensive game. The Spaniard needs to be given enough game time. It could be a healthy addition for the Blues and Thomas Tuchel and the team management needs to utilize Niguez accordingly.
