Five favorites to win Golden Glove at 2022 FIFA World Cup

FIFA World Cup 2022 Golden Glove favorites

At each FIFA World Cup competition, the best goalkeeper receives the Golden Glove award. Since the first competition in Uruguay in 1930, this honor has been granted to the greatest goalkeepers. This prize is also known as the “Lev Yashin Award” in honor of Lev Yashin, the greatest goalie in the history of the Soviet Union.

The first person to take home this trophy was Enrique Ballesteros of Uruguay. Uruguay won the inaugural World Cup with a 4-2 victory over Argentina. The most recent winner of the award is Belgian international Thibaut Courtois, who did so in 2018 when his squad placed third in the competition. Hugo Lloris of France, Allison of Brazil, Emiliano Martinez of Argentina, Manuel Nuer of Germany, and Courtois are the top five contenders for this year’s Golden Glove award in Qatar.

2. Emiliano Martinez

The much favorite team to win the World Cup this year, Argentina has a lot of faith in their shot-stopper Emiliano Martinez. He had already shown his influence in the team’s result in last year’s Copa America Championship. Now, Aston Villa goalkeeper Martinez has been a great shout in international championships for a while.

With Messi and Co chasing their first World Cup title in 36 years, Emiliano Martinez has a huge role to play. Martinez’s relationship with Argentina had started long back since the time he had played for the team in under-17 and under-20 championships. He also received the Golden Glove for Copa America 2021.

3. Hugo Lloris

2018 World Cup Silver Glove winner Hugo Lloris will surely be a shout for the golden glove this term. Now, French Captain Lloris had played 139 matches in International football and had a vast experience that nobody on this list has. With no Pogba and Ngolo Kante in Midfield, Lloris will have a lot of work to do in his team’s performance.

With Denmark, Tunisia, and Australia to face in the group and need to finish first in the group to avoid Argentina in the Round of 16, France and Lloris need to step up from the first match itself. He had also faced a lot of criticism throughout his career due to poor decision making qualities in Captain positions.

4. Thibaut Courtois

The current Golden Glove holder Thibaut Courtois is coming to this year’s World Cup with FIFA best goalkeeper award in his name. He had been in stunning form for his club Real Madrid in their team’s incredible UCL winning campaign last term. He has been named the player of the match in the final against Klopp’s Liverpool side.

As Belgium is not as good as they were in the last World Cup, surely Courtois has not been like that, he is getting better and better every day, and he will be one of the key men for Belgium this year. He was also the youngest goalkeeper to ever represent the Belgium National Football Team.

5. Manuel Nuer

Germany and Bayern Munich’s Goalkeeper and 2014 World Cup’s Golden glove winner Manuel Neuer, is still the best keeper the world has ever seen. The now 36 years Old Nuer had always shown, age is just a number. He had been in fine form for his national team in their qualifying campaign.

The so-called ‘ sweeper-keeper still has a lot of influence in the German team’s game plan. As the Germans were criticized for their early group stage exit in 2018, they will surely perform better this term, and their captain Nuer has a great role to play in it. He was also the top goalkeeper for Germany in the 2010 World Cup.

All five candidates are very much worthy for the position and everybody is eager to know who will win the very auspicious Golden Glove this year. The FIFA World Cup 2022 is very much overlooked for the same. The World Cup is all set to begin on November 20 and will end on December 18.
