Most Successful South American team at FIFA World Cup
Brazil National Team at FIFA World Cup
The most successful football team from South America in the FIFA World Cup is the Brazil National Football Team. They are the most successful team ever, not just in South America, having captured the championship a record five times. Numerous records were broken by the team.
Five times—in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002—were they declared winners. With a record of 73 triumphs in 109 games played, a goal difference of 124, 237 points, and 18 losses, the Seleçao also has the best overall performance in the World Cup competition, both proportionally and absolutely.
As well as being the only team to have won the World Cup on four different continents—once in Europe (1958 Sweden), once in South America (1962 Chile), twice in North America (1970 Mexico and 1994 United States), and once in Asia (2002 Korea/Japan)—it is the only national team to have participated in every World Cup edition without missing a game or needing to go through the playoffs.
They also have the fourth-highest peak football Elo rating ever, which was reached in 1962, and the greatest average football Elo rating. Brazil now holds the record for the most Team of the Year first-ranking victories in the FIFA rankings, with 12.
Brazil creating records in the FIFA World Cup
The greatest football squad in history was the Brazil team from 1970. Other Brazilian teams, like those from 1958–62 and 1994–2002, as well as the talented 1982 squad, are also highly regarded and frequently rated among the greatest teams in history. The Brazilian national team set a record in 1996 by being undefeated in 35 straight games, a mark that stood for 25 years.
Brazil defeated Sweden 5-2 in the championship match to win their first World Cup and became the first country to win the tournament outside of its own continent. The team was under extreme pressure early on. Pelé described it as a nation coming of age in a tearful way.
Brazil’s road to winning the FIFA World Cups
After the regular talisman, Garrincha was given the honour and the duty of leading Brazil to its second World Cup victory in 1962. In Mexico in 1970, Brazil won their third World Cup. It fielded what is now frequently regarded as the greatest World Cup football team ever. Brazil then went 24 years without either winning the World Cup or even making it to the championship game.
Their troubles came to an end in the 1994 World Cup in the USA, where a dependable team led by Romário and Bebeto in attack, captain Dunga in midfield, goalkeeper Cláudio Taffarel, and defender Jorginho won the World Cup for a then-record fourth time. By winning in 2002, they once again broke their previous record.
