Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are two of the greatest players to ever play the game. The duo have set a benchmark that no other player will ever achieve again. Both, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi moved to a different club last summer, with Ronaldo returning back to Manchester United and Messi joining Paris Saint-Germain.

Ronaldo has had a greater impact at the Red Devils than what Messi has had at the Parisian club. The Portuguese star has had more than 20 goal contributions this season in a mediocre team. On the other hand, Messi has just not got started this season in his new club and is slowly settling in.

Both the players have been at the top of their game for more than a decade now but slowly age is becoming a factor for the duo. Cristiano Ronaldo has been one of the standout players for Manchester United this season, but has displayed some very poor performances as well. Whereas, Lionel Messi has struggled to find form in Paris Saint-Germain and has not been up to the mark.

Gary Lineker and Piers Morgan were involved in another Twitter row yesterday night. This time it was over whether Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi is the best football player of all time. The spat started on Twitter when Gary Lineker replied to a tweet that had a Sir Alex Ferguson’s quote posted.

The quote by Sir Alex Ferguson was,” Cristiano Ronaldo could play for Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Doncaster Rovers….anyone, and score a hat-trick in one game. I am not sure Messi can do it. I think Messi is a Barcelona product.”

Lineker replied to this tweet by saying,” This is nonsensical. I know we don’t tend to look beyond these shores very much, and I’m sure Sir Alex is being supportive of one of his own, but even as recently as this summer, Messi almost single-handedly won the Copa America for Argentina. They’re both greats.”

Piers Morgan then intervened,” It’s perfectly sensical, Jugs. Messi’s clearly lost his magic since leaving Barca. Ronaldo’s kept it at many clubs/countries including back at United now. That’s why he’s the GOAT.”

Gary Lineker responded to this,” He’s the GOAT now? So you’re judging 2 of the greatest players of all-time on how they perform in their mid thirties when they’re both past their best. I don’t care who you or anyone else thinks is better, it’s not important, but a lack of respect for either is totally unwarranted.”

Morgan hit back,” Fergie was not disrespectful, he just said Messi would not play as well outside of his Barcelona comfort zone, and as we can all now see, he does not.”

Gary Lineker argued this opinion by saying,” He is nearly 35. What on earth do you expect? It’s absurd and disrespectful to suggest that Messi in his prime could not perform wondrously in any league in the world.”

Piers Morgan was not having any of it and replied,” Ronaldo’s 37 and still banging in wondrous hat-tricks. Messi’s 3 years younger & fading faster than my taste buds after Covid – because he’s not got his Barca support blanket. The GOAT debate is over – it’s Cristiano.”

Gary Lineker then ended the spat by saying,” Players will always be judged on their prime years. By your criteria Maradona would be considered average. I know you’re always texting Ronaldo and desperately want him to like you, but you can do that without disrespecting other greats.”
