Amidst the ongoing rumours about a rift between Manchester United players regarding the captaincy of the club, Ralf Rangnick has now has given his thoughts on the matter. The Manchester United boss said the story about the rift between players is “absolutely nonsense” and Harry Maguire will be the United captain as long as he is there.

He said, “This is absolutely nonsense – I’ve never spoken with players about captaincy.”

“This has never been an issue for me, it’s me who decides who is captain and therefore there is no reason for me to speak about that with any other person. Harry Maguire is our captain and he will stay our captain until the end of the season.”

Harry Maguire was handed over the captaincy of the club by Manchester United’s former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about two years ago, however recent reports in the media suggested that his authority has been undermined by 37-year-old Ronaldo’s return.

Marcus Rashford has hit out at claims that he is among a group of Manchester United players “irritated” by Cristiano Ronaldo’s attempts to lead the dressing room with his own clique.

Premier League giants Manchester United have had a hard time both on and off the field this season, and the scrutiny has been intense following the club’s poor results.

Ralf Rangnick’s side beat Brighton 2-0 on Tuesday night to lift the mood, but despite the win, leading German journalist Christian Falk posted on social media on Wednesday that there is “a risk of a split in the team” with Rashford, Harry Maguire taking exception to Ronaldo’s behaviour.

Rashford took to Twitter to hit out against the report on social media, questioning its legitimacy.

He tweeted, “Are we just making it up as we go along now then? Please stop looking for divides.”
