“He’s a legend to the football club.”- Chelsea fans on Roman Abramovich selling the club
Roman Abramovich
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has already had an impact on the sporting world. FIFA and UEFA have suspended Russia from international football and clubs from European competitions. And on Wednesday Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has announced that he intends to sell Chelsea after almost 20 years of ownership, with net proceeds from the sale to be donated to “all victims of the war in Ukraine”.
Chelsea fans when asked about their thoughts on the recent development regarding the club’s change of ownership replied with appreciation towards the work Roman Abramovich has done for the club over these years.
Talking to Sky Sports, the fans said-
“100% a legend. There’s absolutely no question or doubt about it, he’s made the club so great compared to what it was when he came in, there’s nothing else more you can say about him.” – said one fan.
“I would say very much a legend to the football club. Since 2003, he has been wanting to bring success. He’s been very good. Getting 19 trophies in 20 years. I think personally, very, very well.”– said another.
Chelsea fans on the club’s new owner
Fans also expressed concern regarding who would be the new owner of Chelsea and wished that the new owner should be like Roman Abramovich.
One fan said, “An owner for Chelsea, someone like him [Roman Abramovich]. But you know, there’s only one person like him, that’s himself. But someone who’s football oriented, who’s got a passion for it, like Roman did, and someone who’s not gonna come in and just commercialise the club fully.“
Another fan acknowledged that the club owner will need to be one with “deep pockets”, meaning someone in the possession of abundant financial resources.
He said, “I think he’ll probably find a consortium, probably three or four investors that will actually take the football club forward. It’s a great football club. It’s been 19 years with Roman. It’s got a very good buzz about it but, it’s going to take deep pockets.”
It remains to be seen how Chelsea as a club and the fans cope with the unexpected change after all these years of success under the ownership of Roman Abramovich.
