“If it was anybody else with the quality of squad, you’d be in trouble.”- Paul Merson on Chelsea Manager

Paul Merson, ahead of the Chelsea versus Man City game, said that this Chelsea team has underachieved domestically, although they are still fighting for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

The Sky Sports Pundit at the Soccer Saturday show said, “In the league they have [underachieved].”

They[Chelsea] are still in the FA Cup, still in the Champions League and they are in the final of the Carabao Cup, but in the league which is your bread and butter, yeah they have [underachieved]. There’s no question about it.

He goes on to add that Thomas Tuchel is a top-class manager and he[Tuchel] has proven it by winning the Champions League, but Paul points out that the rotation of the star-studded Chelsea squad has been a problem for the German manager.

He adds: “He won the Champions League. There’s not a problem, he’s a top manager.”

Sometimes it works against you having that many top quality players because you have to keep on changing, keeping people happy and that’s the problem.”

Further, the Sky Sports pundit mentions that any other manager would have been in trouble due to the lack of progress this season in the title race after winning the Champions League.

He says, “If it was anybody else, it’s only because they won the Champions League, you’re in trouble.”

If they go on to win the game, they are seven points [behind], it is doable. A draw is no good and 10-points, there’s no chance.”

Manchester City beat Chelsea continue the winning run

Incidentally, the outcome of the game has been neither of them. Manchester City has defeated Chelsea by a fine margin of 1-0 putting themselves 13 points ahead of the second-placed Chelsea in the Premier League table.

After a 0-0 first half, Kevin De Bruyne scored with a brilliant curling effort at the 70 min’ mark to get the home team a lead that proved good enough to take home the 3-points.

This is Manchester City’s 12th win in a row meaning the Blues are in complete control of the title race.
