Playing at home, it was expected for the 35th team in the world rankings to secure a ticket to Australia-New Zealand. However, they finished bottom of the group losing all three matches, and crashed out of the tournament. In fact, Mexico was the only team in Group A to not score a single goal in three matches, conceding five in the process.

The South American team has featured on three occasions. After consecutive appearances in 2011 and 2015, fans thought that the women’s team will also emulate the consistency of the men’s team in terms of World Cup qualifications. However, that was not to be.

This is because Mexico failed to qualify for the World Cup after they didn’t win a single match at CONCACAF Women’s tournament although they were the organizers this time. This is the second consecutive year that the nation had not been qualified for the tournament. Mexico last participated in the tournament back in 2015.

Grouped with England, Japan, and New Zealand, Mexico lost two and drew one. They also managed to concede seven and score four goals in the championship.
