‘Lewandowski deserved the Ballon D’or this year’ Zlatan Ibrahimovic gives his verdict on Ballon D’or

Lionel Messi’s former teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic says Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski deserved to win the 2021 France Football Ballon D’or award. Lionel Messi won the prestigious golden ball for a record seventh time earlier this week beating the likes of Lewandowski and Jorginho as both players were not far away from winning it. Messi’s longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo finished outside the top 5 in 6th place in the rankings for the first time since 2010.

However since Messi winning the Ballon D’or it’s fair to that it hasn’t sat well with some of the current and former players. The latest being no one else but Messi’s former teammate and current AC Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Though the Swedish international had a very short spell at the Catalan club he has always spoken highly about Messi. However even Zlatan says that Robert Lewandowski deserved the award this year despite the record and legacy Lionel Messi has created.

“Ronaldo and Messi are both great. I prefer Messi because we played together. Lionel Messi lives for football. But Robert Lewandowski deserved the Ballon D’or this year.” The 40-year old said. Zlatan Ibrahimovic may not have the chance to ever win the Ballon D’or and his best years are already behind him. However he is one of the most decorated football players of all time having an impressive trophy cabinet. Zlatan has won a total of 31 trophies in his long career and is still going strong with AC Milan on the quest of winning the Serie A this season.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the only active player alongside Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski to have scored over 500 goals for club and country. Whether the Ballon D’or should have been given to Lewandowski or not the Polish international has undoubtedly been in exceptional form for Bayern Munich and Poland national team. Messi was quick to mention Lewandowski as the clear winner of the 2020 Ballon D’or which was reportedly cancelled by France football because of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. He also requested France football to give the Polish goal machine the trophy he truly deserves.
