It was issued approximately a week after Barcelona’s humiliating 8-2 loss to the German side -Bayern Munich. The initial deal between the club and Lionel Messi was that he would be allowed to leave only if he notified the management before the 10th of June, 2020. Messi had, however, failed to meet this deadline to express his desire to leave the Spanish Giants.

In his statement, he said this –

“I understand that the time frame of the right of unilateral termination without cause regulated by the aforementioned clause must be interpreted in accordance with the exceptional circumstances in which the 2019/20 football competition season has taken place, due to the state of emergency and the situation of force majeure resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic,” read the burofax.”

“Due to these exceptional circumstances, the 2019/20 competition season ended yesterday, without prejudice to the fact that for our team, this end took place on August 15, when we returned to Barcelona after our elimination from the Champions League on the night of August 14.”

“In any case, within 10 days following the end of the season of competition, and thus meeting the agreed deadline for exercising the aforementioned clause 3.1., in accordance with the material contract of our agreement, which must be interpreted in accordance with the exceptional circumstances of the 2019/20 season, I exercise my right to terminate the contract with effect from August 30, 2020, with the consequences provided for in the aforementioned stipulation 3.1.”

Barcelona contended against the force majeure clause and other arguments made by Lionel Messi and with a lot of effort and persistence, convinced the superstar to stay at Barcelona.

Inevitable ending

In 2013, La Liga established an “economic control” section responsible for analyzing each club’s budget and determining a spending cap for each year. This squad capacity is the maximum sum an organization can invest in its athletes, trainers, physiotherapists, reserve teams, and other personnel.

Teams have the freedom to divide the cash among transfers and salaries as they see fit, as long as the total maximum is not exceeded. Expected revenues, earnings and deficits from the prior season, outstanding debt obligations, and additional financing streams are among the facets examined in determining the limitation.

Barcelona’s options are limited since players like Coutinho, Aguero, and Dembele are still under agreement with the team and have a legitimate right to claim compensation, whereas Lionel Messi’s deal expired at the end of last year and he had to be signed as a free agent for 2021-22. Even if Messi had chosen to play for free, Barcelona would not have been ready to negotiate with him, and his signing would have required the squad to sell players and restructure agreements with high-earners, both of which have proven ineffective thus far.

Therefore, due to Barcelona’s short-sightedness with financial resources and a small amount of bad luck, Lionel Messi bid farewell to his childhood club after about 20 years and joined PSG last month.
