The biggest tournament in the game of football is the FIFA World Cup. It’s where the nations collide in a bid to take home the title of the best footballing country in the world alongside their very own famous trophy. Like many most special sporting events in the world, the World Cup is hosted every four years, and when it comes back, fans and football passion go bonkers.

The first ever FIFA World Cup was played in the year 1930. The Federation Internationale de Football Association organized it. The debut campaign was won by South American giants Uruguay. The game is held every four years. The only time the event was canceled was during World War II.

The tournament is unlike the Olympics, where players have an age limit. The game was previously named after Jules Rimet, one of the tournament’s founders, till 1970. Brazil, as of now, has won the FIFA World Cup the most, a record five times. Germany and Italy follow them with four each. Argentina, France, and Uruguay have won the trophy twice.

FIFA World Cup list of teams: Germany (1982 & 1986)

Former Bayern München chairman and professional player Karl-Heinz Rummenigge led West Germany to top their group in the 1982 World Cup. They stood above the likes of Algeria, Chile, and Austria. They defeated England and Spain in the quarter and semi-finals respectively. They then lost the final against Italy by 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabeau in Madrid.

The West Germans again in 1986 went on to play the finals but this time they were the second toppers in their group which had Denmark, Uruguay, and Scotland. Morocco, Mexico, and France were defeated by them as they played the finals where Karl-Heinz Rummenigge’s side was defeated by Diego Maradona led Argentina with the scoreline 3-2.

FIFA World Cup list of teams: Netherlands (1974 & 1978)

The Netherlands topped their group in the 1974 World Cup with a draw and two wins. They faced Sweden, Bulgaria, and Uruguay in their group. It was followed by games agisnt Argentina, East Germany, and Brazil in the round of 16, quarter, and semi-finals. The Johan Cruyff-led side played West Germany iand lost the game by 2-1 in Olympia stadion in Munich.

After four years, 1978, they again went on to play in the finals of the. Iran, Peru, and Scotland were below them on the group table as they won two and drew only one. They went on to beat Austria, West Germany, and Italy to reach the finals only to lose against a Daniel Passarella-led Argentinian. The South Americans won the game 3-1 under the watchful eyes of 71483 spectators.
