Liverpool legend and England World Cup winner Roger Hunt dies at the age of 83

Roger Hunt MBE has died today at the age of 83. Hunt was part of England’s World Cup-winning line-up in 1966 and have scored a massive 244 goals for Liverpool which is the second highest goals first being Ian Rush with 286 goals.

Roger Hunt was born on July 20th, 1938 in Lancashire, England. He signed for Liverpool in the year 1958 and went on to make 492 appearances for the Reds and made his final appearance in December 1969. Hunt was signed by Phil Taylor from non-league Stockton Heath but was kept on by Bill Shankly, and helped the club out of the old Second Division in 1962, going on to win league titles in 1964 and 1966. He also won the FA Cup with Liverpool in 1965.

For England he won 34 caps, scoring 18 goals, and earned his first under Walter Winterbottom in 1962 when Liverpool were still in the second tier. Hunt scored a massive 41 goals in as many games in that season for Liverpool. In the famous 1966 winning journey Roger Hunt scored three goals which helped England come out of the group stage, and made sure he played every game for England in the 1966 World Cup such was his impact in Sir Alf Ramsey’s Team.

Roger Hunt’s all time goal scoring record of 244 goals was broken by another Liverpool legend Ian Rush in 1992 but Hunt still remains the top goal scorer for Liverpool in the Premier League till date.

Liverpool and England mourns after the death of Roger Hunt

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said “It’s really sad news and our thoughts and our love go to his family. Unfortunately, it feels too frequent in this moment we are saying farewell to these giants of our club.”

The Three Lions also acknowledged their 1966 World Cup winner and were saddened by his loss.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said “RIP Sir Roger Hunt one of the greatest goal scorers our club has ever seen. Sir Roger along with the other Legends from the 60’s made @LFC the club it is today.”

Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton also offered their condolences on the demise of Roger Hunt at the age of 83.
