Luis Suarez opens up about his time with Liverpool and what made him extend his stay at the Anfield
Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez has opened up about his time with the Premier League club Liverpool and how Brendon Rogers convinced him to extend his stay at Anfield. Suarez cherishes his experience at Liverpool and puts his eyes on success when Atletico Madrid visits Anfield for their Champions League Group B clash on Wednesday.
Suarez moved to Liverpool in January 2011 from Ajax and played a crucial role there enjoying one of the best seasons of his career. He was a pivotal element in one of the club’s most significant events in recent memory. Suarez marked the beginning of Liverpool’s transformation into a club capable of attracting the greatest players in the world.
Ahead of Atletico Madrid’s Champions League clash against Liverpool at Anfield, Suarez reveals several details about his time at Merseyside. Also, he talked about the role that former Liverpool manager Brendan Rogers played in helping him extend his run at the club. He revealed how a call from Rodgers convinced him not to leave Liverpool after only 18 months with the club.
‘I think I’d been at Liverpool for a year and a half when Brendan took charge in July 2012. Back then, I had opportunities to sign for other clubs who were getting in contact with me, but he phoned me when I was in Uruguay on holiday, to tell me that he had another way of thinking, that he wanted to change the club and its philosophy, that he wanted the club to get back in the Champions League and fight to win big trophies, that he was going to make the team play great football,” said Luiz Suarez to UEFA.com.

Suarez further added that he enjoyed the conversation with Rodgers and really loved the manager’s philosophy and ideas which convinced him to stay at the club.
“He asked me to believe and trust him. I enjoyed that chat. I liked his conviction, the philosophy he wanted to implement at the club, so I talked to my agent and the club to say that I didn’t want to leave, that I wanted another opportunity to be successful at Liverpool. That year wasn’t as good as we wanted, but ideas were already pretty clear,” added Suarez.
Suarez appeared in 133 games for Liverpool across all competitions and struck 82 goals while assisting in another 29. He then moved to Barcelona in 2014 where he rose to prominence with the likes of Messi and Neymar before being transferred to Atletico Madrid in 2020.
