Real Madrid fans can breathe a huge sigh of relief, Luka Modric has finally signed a contract extension. The new deal will see the Croatian remain at the club next season till June 2022.

Modric was set to become a free-agent at the end of the season, like a number of players at the club whose contract is due to end this season. Instead, the club has put forward a fresh 1 year deal for the Croat, who looks all set to retire at the club.

Modric has been a crucial player for Real this season and was deservedly awarded a new contract.

The 35-year-old joined Real from Tottenham for £33m in August 2012. He won the 2018 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first player other than Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the award in more than a decade.

Modric was Real Madrid’s second-most used outfield player after Karim Benzema, and the midfield maestro featured in 48 times for Los Blancos in all competitions. Despite his age, the midfielder displayed tremendous stamina playing throughout the 90 minutes for most matches and performed exceedingly well.

Real’s No 10 has enjoyed a trophy-laden spell in the Spanish capital, having won 13 major trophies in nine seasons at the club – including four Champions League triumphs since joining the club in 2012. The Croatia international has also recorded 28 goals and 16 assists during his 9 year career at Real Madrid.

Real Madrid announced Modric’s new contract on Tuesday morning.

“Real Madrid CF and Luka Modric have agreed to extend the player’s contract, which remains with the club until June 30, 2022,” the club said in a statement.

“I’m 35 but I feel like I’m only 27. I feel great,” Luka said after signing the new deal. “You shouldn’t look at the age, it’s all about how we perform on the pitch, regardless of age. I’m still hungry for more, to continue playing at the highest level and I feel great.”
