Manchester United were beaten and knocked out of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 by Atletico Madrid on 15th March, 2022. The Red Devils went into the game with the aggregate score 1-1 and were clear favourites to win the tie. But Diego Simeone’s men put on a brilliant display by scoring early and did not allow Manchester United to score a single goal.
There were many things that went wrong for the Red Devils during the must-win game. Manchester United’s interim boss Ralf Rangnick faced questions over his selected line-up as well. The German manager benched Paul Pogba for the important game and he also brought off Bruno Fernandes just after an hour, which was a big call.
The other substitution that the fans did not like was subbing Marcus Rashford on. The England international has just looked out of sorts and has struggled to find form this season. Rashford has not been able to perform consistently at all this season and has seen his place taken out from the starting 11.
The 24 year old has faced a lot of backlash from the media as well as the fans for his performances. Marcus Rashford has played just 26 times for Manchester United this season. Out of 26 games, the England international has started only 15 games and has scored only 4 goals.
Manchester United have now been knocked out of the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup and are currently 20 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City. The Red Devils will have a trophy less season and will go 5 years without a trophy to their name. This is the longest trophy drought the club has faced in almost 40 years.

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford issues apology after confronting a fan:
Manchester United star Marcus Rashford was seen confronting a fan outside Old Trafford after his team lost 1-0 at home to Atletico Madrid and were knocked out of the Champions League. The 24 year old was facing a backlash from fans outside the stadium and couldn’t control the urge to confront them.
Marcus Rashford later said,” A video can paint a thousand words and in this case led to inaccurate information being shared on social media. Guys, for weeks I have been heckled, threatened, questioned and last night my emotion got the better of me. I am a human being.”
The 24 year old continued,” Reading and hearing that stuff about yourself every day it wears you down. No one is more critical of my performance than me. But what you see in this video lacks context. I had been heckled from the minute I stepped foot outside the ground, abuse not just aimed at my football.”
Rashford added,” People were looking for a reaction from me. Phones were at the ready. Of course I should have walked straight past and ignored it, that is what we are supposed to do, right? I want to clarify two things.”
” The first being what I actually said to the man throwing abuse at me which was: ‘Come over here and say it to my face’ (a fact security can back me up) and secondly, the fact that I used my forefinger to direct the fan to: ‘Come over and say it to my face’,” added the England international.
Manchester United star Marcus Rashford lastly said,” I did not gesture with my middle finger. I am not entitled. This is not ego. I am upset. I am disappointed. And in that moment it was silly but I was being human.”
