Who is Michael Carrick? All you need to know about Manchester United’s interim manager
Manchester United have finally sacked their manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, after United’s 4-1 defeat against Premier League strugglers Watford.
In a statement released by the United board, they announced that the Norwegian manager had been relieved of his duties and it will be his assistant manager, Michael Carrick to take over the managerial duties for the upcoming matches at the club until the club settles on a replacement manager till the end of the season.
Michael Carrick spent 12 years at Manchester United as a player
Michael Carrick is a Manchester United legend himself, having spent 12 years at the club himself, after joining them from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006. He retired as a United player in 2018, after notching up 464 appearances for the club in all competitions.
Carrick is one of the most successful players to have played at United, and was a key figure of the team under Alex Ferguson. He won 17 titles at the club, winning the Premier League 5 times and the coveted UEFA Champions League in 2007/08. Carrick was also part of the team which won Manchester United’s most recent title in 2016/17 under the management of Jose Mourinho.
Playing as a defensive midfielder, for most of his career he did not find the net often, and scored a meagre 24 goals and had 37 assists to go with it in those matches. After retiring, the midfielder wasted no time in choosing his next step, as he joined the backroom staff of the Jose Mourinho led support staff of the club at the time.
He has been the assistant manager at the club, ever since and even stayed on after Jose Mourinho was replaced with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, the mantle has fallen on him to lead the side in the upcoming matches, as he looks to bring a sense of stability at Manchester United and bring them out of the hole they have dug themselves into in the past few matches.
He will take charge of the team for the first time as a manager in the UEFA Champions League encounter on the 23rd of November against a sturdy Spanish side Villarreal.
