3 reasons why signing Cristiano Ronaldo will not be a good move for Chelsea

Chelsea Cristiano Ronaldo

Since Cristiano Ronaldo’s admission of wanting to leave Manchester United this summer, one club that is leading the race to sign the player is Chelsea. The London CLub’s new owner, Todd Boehly already has a meeting with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Medes to discuss a possible move.

Thomas Tuchel is also an admirer of Ronaldo. Moreover, The Blues also need a new striker to replace Romelu Lukaku in the central position. However, a move for Ronaldo doesn’t make complete sense for the men at Stamford Bridge. Here’s why:-

3 Reasons why Chelsea should not sign Cristiano Ronaldo

1. Not a presser upfront

All the successful clubs in Europe today have one tactical thing in common. They press high up the pitch. Be it manchester City, Liverpool or the Blues. However, Cristiano Ronaldo is not exactly a presser.

At 37, while the player is immensely fit, he needs to save his energy for when the team needs him in attacks. Hence, he can’t press the opposition when Tuchel’s side loses possession and that could be a huge loss for Thomas Tuchel.

2. Doesn’t fit into the system

Thomas Tuchel’s style of football doesn’t require a traditional no. 9 upfront. He needs someone more dynamic who can drop deep, help make the play and also make the fake runs to release the midfielders and winger.

Among all the qualities that Ronaldo possesses, this isn’t one of them. This is also precisely the reason Romelu Lukaku didn’t perform well at Stamford Bridge. The Belgian wasn’t a good passer of the ball.

3. Chelsea has been performing better without a central striker

Thomas Tuchel helped Chelsea win the Champions League without a striker in the squad. The team makes use of their wide wingers to create space while one of the midfielders plays as a false 9.

With Kai Havertz and Mason Mount available to play false 9 and wingers like Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner and now Raheem Sterling and Raphinha, the team will not need a central striker as much as they think.
