FC Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele has suffered yet another injury setback. During Saturday’s match against Girona in the Spanish league, Dembele pulled up after a sprint and asked to be substituted in the 25th minute. He walked off the field and watched the rest of the game from the sidelines as his replacement, Pedri, scored the winning goal for the team.
It was a big blow for Barcelona, who is pushing for the La Liga title this season. They will miss the Frenchman’s magic in the wings as they take on Manchester United in the Europa League on 16 February. “Test this evening on Ousmane Dembele have revealed that he has strained the rectus femoris muscle in his left thigh. It means he is side-lined until he can recover from the injury,” the club said in a statement.
FC Barcelona currently has 47 points from 18 matches and is 6 points clear of Real Madrid in second. The defending champions have played 17 matches and will play the reverse fixture against the league leaders in March.
“The Frenchman has displayed exceptional form in the 27 games that he played in this season, scoring six goals and delivering seven assists. He has been one of the consistently picked players by Xavi Hernandez,” the club statement lauded the consistency of the French winger who has established himself in the former Barca captain’s side.

Dembele’s injury history is well-known, and this latest setback will likely mean he will be out for an undetermined period of time. The team will have to find a way to compensate for his absence and will have to rely on other players to step up and fill the void left by the Frenchman.
