In order to commemorate the World Cup, Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA called for a one-month ceasefire in Ukraine. He claimed that sport should unite people. He suggested the World Cup starting on Sunday in Qatar may act as a “good trigger” in the nearly nine-month Russian invasion of Ukraine while speaking to leaders of the Group of 20 major economies assembled in Bali.

“My plea to all of you is to think of a temporary ceasefire for one month for the duration of the World Cup,” he spoke during a G20 leaders’ lunch. A partial ceasefire may still be possible, “the implementation of some humanitarian corridors or anything that could lead to the resumption of dialogue,”  he stated.

“You’re the world leaders, you have the ability to influence the course of history. Football and the World Cup are offering you and the world a unique platform of unity and peace all over the world.”, the FIFA President further added.

He mentioned that Russia had hosted the 2018 World Cup and that Ukraine is presenting a joint proposal with Spain and Portugal for the 2030 tournament. He described football as a unifier. “We are not naive to believe that football can solve the world’s problems,” said Infantino. However, he noted that the World Cup provided a “unique platform” because it is anticipated that five billion people — or more than half of humanity — will watch it on television.

He also added, “Let’s take this opportunity to do everything we can to start putting an end to all conflicts.”  President Joe Biden and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov attended the G20 talks, but it was unclear at first whether they were paying attention to Infantino, who later requested that the leaders sign a memento football.
