The use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) has come under huge scrutiny in the past few weeks as AC Milan star, Christian Pulisic has publicly claimed that he is completely in favor of getting rid of VAR.
The Premier League game between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspurs raised eyebrows after a controversial moment saw Luiz Diaz’s goal wrongly chalked off for ‘offside’. However, upon later review, PGMOL revealed that the goal should have been given and the mistake made by referee Simon Hooper was down to human error. Since then, the PGMOL has also released the audio file of the conversations taking place between the referees involved in the onfield decision with many fans online claiming that officiating in the Premier League is an ’embarrassment’.
With VAR being the centre of attention, AC Milan player Christian Pulisic is one of the players who is against the concept altogether. “Completely Eliminate it? Yeah I would,” said the player on the ‘American Dream Podcast’. The player further added, “It’s one of those things where if it goes for you, you love it, If it’s against you, you hate it.”
VAR was introduced to provide a way for “clear and obvious errors” and “serious missed incidents” to be corrected. However, recent events have shown otherwise with many of its decisions being criticized and the Liverpool incident doing it no favours.
Christian Pulisic publicly criticized VAR
While Christian Pulisic is currently anti-VAR, this was not always the case. After a World Cup qualifier between the USA and Canada which ended in defeat for the Americans, Christian Pulisic was interviewed where he claimed that VAR does not have much effect.

“What’s the point if you’re not going to use it? I’ve never been a fan of VAR, to be honest, but I thought it could potentially help in these games in CONCACAF,“ the American stated believing that it would reduce the amount of overly-physical challenges in CONCACAF games. The winger was fouled repeatedly during the however, was not protected by VAR which he believed was the whole point of the new concept.
Christian Pulisic also stated that VAR was detrimental to the ‘flow of the game’. “When you score a goal and then it takes five minutes to get checked, the celebrations are just off; it can be really frustrating to the players,” he states further adding that emotional mood swings can affect the game massively. With the current ongoing situation, VAR does not seem to be going anywhere. For better or for worse, VAR is being used everywhere where the top teams play.
