Cross-city rivals AC Milan and Inter Milan, who, between them, have been crowned European champions 10 times, will face off on Wednesday in the first of two semifinals for European football’s top club competition. It has been 13 years since a team from Italy’s financial and commercial hub reached the Champions League final.
The fixture between these clubs is known as the Milan Derby in English, however, in Italian, it is known as the Derby Della Madonnina or the Derby di Milano. Inter Milan currently holds the bragging rights when it comes to the most wins in this derby. Inter have won 80 matches, whilst AC Milan has won 71. However, AC Milan has won more trophies with 49 compared to Inter’s 43.
It will be the first time the Milan giants have played each other in the Champions League after 2005’s so-called “derby of shame”, a quarterfinal won by Milan whose second leg was abandoned after livid Inter fans launched a barrage of flares onto the San Siro pitch with their team way behind in the tie. AC Milan’s last Champions League victory was in 2007 when they beat Liverpool 2-1 in the final held in Athens, Greece. On the other hand, Inter last won the Champions League in 2010, when they beat Bayern Munich 2-0 in the final in Spain’s Madrid.

Milan v Inter trophies
As part of their incredible rivalry, both teams have enjoyed periods of domestic dominance across the last century, with a positive revival in recent seasons. Following Juventus’ dominance of Serie A, with nine league titles in a row from 2012 to 2020, the Milanese duo hauled themselves back into title contention as Antonio Conte won the Scudetto with Inter in 2021, before Stefano Pioli claimed it for Milan in 2022.
Both clubs have won 19 Serie A titles and seven Supercoppa Italiana titles to their name. Inter edges it in the domestic cup competitions with eight to their name compared to Milan’s five. However, the Rossoneris shined on the European stage claiming seven UEFA Champions League titles compared to the Nerrazzuris’ three. Both clubs share the same stadium San Siro.
When did Milan and Inter last win the Serie A?
Inter Milan won the title in the 2020-21 season, while AC Milan finished 2nd. Last season AC Milan finished on top of the league table, while Inter Milan came in a close second. The rivals also share the legendary San Siro stadium. It has a seating capacity of 80,018, making it one of the largest stadiums in Europe, and the largest in Italy.
San Siro is set to host the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics. The stadium is set to be partially demolished after that with AC Milan and Inter Milan aiming to play home matches at the new venue by 2027.

The two sides have met 235 times previously in all competitions, with Inter Milan winning 87, including their last two in the league and Italian Super Cup. AC Milan has 79 wins, while 69 matches have ended in a draw. While Inter has the most wins in the Italian top flight, AC Milan has dominated them in the UCL not losing any encounters in the European stage. Andriy Shevchenko is the top scorer in the derby with 14 goals.
