As the winter transfer window approaches, Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has presented a list of demands to the club’s leadership, including chairman Daniel Levy. The Australian has reportedly informed the Tottenham hierarchy that he needs a new central defender, an additional winger, and a new midfielder.
Tottenham‘s Premier League journey this season has been peculiar. They started impressively, going unbeaten for ten matches but stumbled after losing to Chelsea, leading to a win-less streak of five games. Despite bouncing back and edging towards the top four, their progress has been challenging. Now, the club faces a fresh challenge with a severe injury crisis affecting key players like Ivan Perisic, Rodrigo Bentancur, defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, James Maddison, and Manor Solomon for an extended period.
The former Celtic manager aims to reinforce the defense amid key absences. After the eye-opening defeat to Brighton this week, the club might pursue a center-back with Genoa’s Radu Dragusin, Nice’s Jean Clair Todibo, and Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi among the top targets. Additionally, Spurs are considering a bid for Ajax talent Stanis Idumbo Mozambo as an attacking midfielder. They are also competing for Ivan Toney from Brentford, alongside Chelsea and Arsenal, while Chelsea midfielder Connor Gallagher remains as an option.
Although initially downplaying any magical transformations in the January transfer window, injuries have compelled Postecoglou to reconsider his stance. Concerns also loom over the team’s performance without crucial players like club captain Son-Heung Min, set to leave for the AFC Asian Cup starting January 12.
Tottenham’s 4-2 loss to Brighton reveals defensive gaps, urging swift reinforcements
Tottenham Hotspur’s recent 4-2 loss to Brighton has brought significant focus to their defensive vulnerabilities, exposing critical weaknesses in the defense. This has prompted a pressing requirement for a backup defender to cover for the injured Micky van de Ven and Argentine World Cup winner, Cristian Romero.
Both defenders, alongside James Maddison, stand out as crucial signings for the club. In Spurs’ match against Brighton, natural full-backs, Welshman Ben Davies and Brazilian Emerson Royal were made to play in the heart of the defense, resulting in concerns over the squad’s depth in that position.
While Romero faces a prolonged absence, the club will need an immediate replacement and is eyeing in-form Nice defender Jean Clair Todibo as a reliable option. Todibo might partner with Micky in defense once he returns from injury at the start of 2024.
