Memphis Depay leaves FC Barcelona after a disappointing spell and joins Athletico Madrid. The Dutchman has had a difficult second season at Barca. After getting off to a good start at the club, he thought he would now try to get his career back on track at Atleti under Diego Simeone. But, due to his recent performance, fans were disappointed and criticized him on social media, calling him ‘fat,’ ‘slow,’ and ‘out of shape.’
Everyone assumed that Atleti’s signing would be a wise one. During his debut season at Barcelona, he showed flashes of brilliance and showed that he can score goals in Spain. Athletico Madrid fans get already getting backlash for the Vinicius Jr. incident. Real Madrid has lambasted the “disgusting act of racism, xenophobia, and intolerance” and thanked fans for their “love and support” for Vinicius Jr.

The Dutchman always wears ‘Memphis’ on the back of his shirt instead of his surname. He had explained that it was a decision he took due to his difficult relationship with his father, who left the family when he was just four years old. “Those things are a part of my life,” he told the BBC in 2015. “It is not part of football.
