Yesterday’s El Classico was a nail-biting affair which saw Barcelona and Real Madrid score one each in the first half. The second half wasn’t any different as the two teams were equally efficient. In the end, Frank Kessie scored a match-deciding goal in the stoppage time. And Barcelona went 12 points clear at the top of the table.

Pep Guardiola was in attendance last night to experience Barcelona win three straight Classicos for the first time since the now-Manchester City boss was in charge at Camp Nou during the 2011-12 season. Other than Pep, 95,000 plus fans attended the match last night at Spotify Camp Nou. This attendance record also exceeded those of the last four Classicos at home, excluding the one, played behind closed doors by the Covid in the 1-3 of 2020-21: 86,422 in the 1-2 of 2021-22; 93,246 in the 0-0 of 2019-20; 92,008 in the 1-1 of the first leg of the semifinals of the 2018-19 Spanish Cup and 93,265 in the 5-1 win over Madrid in LaLiga 2018-19. Lapaorta reportedly blames Bartomeu for the current financial downfall of FC Barcelona (Image Via- Google)

It all started back in 2020 when news of huge financial losses and huge debts of the club came out. It was the post Joseph Maria Bartomeu era. Barcelona just had a new president in form of Joan Laporta.

Situations got out of hand. Some players had to take a pay cut to support the club’s finances. While the club also had to let go of some, whose figures reportedly were too big for the wage bills. Due to such circumstances and more, Barcelona was unable to renew the contract of their greatest ever, Lionel Messi. The club saw Leo Messi move to the French capital and sign for Paris Saint Germain for free. In the next year and a half or so, Barcelona sold a few of their players even at cut-price deals to balance their finances.

Many people have blamed Bartomeu and his team for the current situation of the club’s finances. Laporta himself had said, “We are cleaning our predecessor’s messes. They are the ones who have to answer for what has happened to the club”

The club, under the presidency of Joan Laporta, has reportedly been doing well, even though the financial problems still have been disturbing them. Even with all the financial restrictions, Laporta has managed to help Barcelona have quite a few exciting transfers at little to no transfer fees. The transfer of Robert Lewandowski and Frank Kessie are two such transfers.

Laporta’s “Financial Levers” have been reportedly effective. Barcelona reportedly sold 25% of its Tv rights to an American company Sixth street for an amount of almost €527.5 million. Laporta seems to have plans ready for a few more levers to be pulled. Barcelona is currently trying to lower theremins wage bill for the La Liga FFP rule. They are also trying to make revenue in whichever way possible to get their financial situation back on track. FC Barcelona is slowly recovering because of Laporta’s lever from what can only be termed as a financial nightmare. But they still have a long way to get their financial conditions right.
