La Liga giants FC Barcelona are reportedly ready to propose a £40 million deal to acquire Manchester United’s outcast, Mason Greenwood, in the 2024 summer transfer window. Intriguingly, the club intends to include Lionel Messi‘s iconic No.10 jersey as part of the offer to Greenwood.
The ex-Manchester United striker, currently on loan at Getafe from the Red Devils, has excelled this season, scoring five goals and offering four assists in 15 matches for the La Liga team. His reliable displays contributed to Jose Bordalas‘ squad rising to the 8th spot in the league standings. It’s uncertain if the English player will make a future return to United after being suspended due to past criminal allegations involving accusations of r*pe and s*xual assault. Greenwood was later acquitted of these charges.
Numerous clubs have shown keen interest in signing the player once his contract with United ends in 2024. Barcelona, leading the race to acquire the winger, reportedly plans to offer £40 million along with Lionel Messi’s iconic No.10 jersey. Following Messi’s departure to PSG in 2021, the No.10 jersey was initially given to winger Ansu Fati, but he failed to live up to its potential. After Fati’s move to Brighton last summer, the jersey remained unassigned. Barcelona aims to use this as an enticement to attract the English international to join the Catalan club.
A move to Barcelona could offer Xavi numerous attacking possibilities, potentially giving Greenwood the chance to rejuvenate his career and form. Both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are also eyeing the forward, while Getafe is also pushing to secure his permanent transfer.
Getafe aims to set a new club record to secure Mason Greenwood permanently from Man Utd
Getafe has supposedly offered a substantial £40 million deal to secure Mason Greenwood permanently once his loan from Manchester United concludes in 2024. While playing on loan at Getafe, Greenwood’s impressive displays in Spain have earned a commendation from his manager, Jose Bordalas.
The eye-watering sum of £40 million represents a significant amount for a club whose current transfer record is €11.8 million (£10.3 million). This amount was what Getafe paid Barcelona for full-back Marc Cucurella’s services in 2020 before eventually selling him for a profit to Brighton. The final decision now rests in the hands of United and their new minority owners, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS group on whether to recall the player due to popular demand or opt for a sale.
