The award was previously won by Pedri, a teammate of Gavi’s at Barcelona, and it has also been given to Matthijs de Ligt and Kylian Mbappe in the past. Despite his lack of elite experience, Gavi emerged onto the forefront in 2021 and immediately established himself as a fixture for Barcelona and Spain.

Despite only turning 18 in August, the aggressive midfielder has already made 60 appearances for the Catalan powerhouses. Barcelona took action to ensure his long-term future by awarding him a contract with a €1 billion release clause in September.
