Royal Antwerp’s midfielder Radja Nainggolan, has been suspended indefinitely for general behavior that reflects poorly on the Belgian Pro League club, the club announced on Monday. The former Inter Milan and AS Roma player was arrested last week for driving with an expired license and was seen smoking an e-cigarette on the bench before Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Standard Liege, according to Belgian media.

“Clear agreements have also been made about what our club does and does not expect from the player,” Antwerp stated.

Antwerp, which is one point behind KRC Genk in the First Division, added that 34-year-old ex-Belgium international Nainggolan and the club would not comment further as the team prepares for games against KV Oostende and Genk.

However, Nainggolan apologized on his Instagram account for what he had done. “The club has made a decision I can only accept, even though I think it might be a bit too severe for me. But I will try to contribute in one way or another,” he captioned.

Nainggolan was forced to apologize in January 2018 after posting a video of himself smoking and drinking while celebrating New Year’s. He later explained his way of life, saying: “I shop at the supermarket, I can drink a glass [of alcohol] and smoke a cigarette with serenity.

“A footballer can smoke, even if he does not do a ‘normal’ job. Hiding one thing means you have other things to hide.”

In his period in Roma he said: “I’m not ashamed because I smoke and I’ve never hidden this habit of mine.

“I know I should set a good example, I have kids… But I’m just a footballer, I do my job. Everyone knows that I smoke and I can’t hide it, but I’m not ashamed.”
