Bayern Munich superstar underwent three plastic surgeries after being diagnosed with skin cancer last summer

Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer has revealed that he had three surgeries to treat his skin cancer. Due to a different condition, the 36-year-old German legend is currently in a race against time to be fit for the World Cup. Following a recent purchase of a sunscreen brand with German tennis player Angelique Kerber, Neuer announced on Instagram on Wednesday that he has been battling skin cancer.

The Bayern stopper explained: “I had to have three operations and have had skin cancer. Since we are constantly training and playing outside and also like to spend our free time in nature, it is essential for us to start with modern sun protection filters and with sun protection factor 50+. So we know for sure that we have a sunscreen that protects us continuously and with which hardly anything can burn.”

Given that he helped Germany win the World Cup in 2014, Neuer is recognized as one of the all-time great goalkeepers. The 6’4″ giant has won the Bundesliga with Bayern every year for the past ten years and has also won the Champions League twice. With 113 appearances for Germany under his belt, this year’s World Cup in Qatar may be his final appearance at the illustrious competition.

According to Bild, the 36-year-old was seen walking around with a plaster on his face before Bayern Munich’s Champions League match against Barcelona in December 2021, which sparked rumours about a potential sickness. Neuer underwent three separate operations but still has the face scar today.

This week, the experienced player returned to training in an effort to make Germany’s final 26-man World Cup squad, which must be submitted by Sunday, November 13. Since Neuer was declared unfit earlier this month after playing his ninth Bundesliga match of the season away to Borussia Dortmund on October 8, Bayern manager Julian Naglesmann has not said anything about Neuer’s health.
