Hertha Berlin Sporting Director Fredi Bobic, was given the sack on Saturday night after threatening to ‘smack’ a reporter during the post-match conference. His side also lost 2-0 to local rivals Union Berlin. Hertha is firmly in the relegation battle in 17th place with just 14 points on the table. They have also managed just 3 wins in 18 games and are currently on a 3-match losing streak.

Bobic, who appeared to be in a sour mood after the game, became aggressive with RBB’s TV reporter, Uri Zahavi, when questioned about his thoughts on the defeat and the future of manager Sandro Schwarz. Zahavi asked, “Can you understand that there is a coaching discussion from the outside?” to which Bobic replied, “No.”

Off camera, Bobic could not contain his frustration and threatened the reporter, saying “If you ask again, you’ll get a scrub.” However, just a few hours later, Bobic was relieved of his duties by Hertha.

On Monday, Bobic came out to apologize for his behavior, telling BILD, “I’m very sorry, I reacted too emotionally. That was just a saying, which of course wasn’t meant that way.” He asked that people not overestimate the incident, given the emotional state he was in shortly after the game.

Zahavi has not commented on the matter. The result of the game leaves The Die Alte Dame second from the bottom of the Bundesliga table, while their city rivals Union Berlin moved within a point of leaders Bayern Munich.

One bright spot for Hertha this season has been Dodi Lukebakio. The Belgian international has been Hertha’s best-attacking player, scoring seven of the team’s 19 goals.

Hertha Berlin’s season has been a mixed bag, with a series of coaching changes and inconsistent results. However, the presence of a consistent goal scorer in Dodi Lukebakio has provided some hope for the future, as the club from Berlin look to stay in the German top flight this season.
