Andre Onana did not leave for the African Cup of Nations, unlike the other players from the league. He instead decided to stay back in England to play for Manchester United’s home fixture against Tottenham Hotspur, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
After the game, he immediately got on a plane to Ivory Coast, but it got delayed due to bad weather in the region. Instead of landing in Yamoussoukro, they landed in Abidjan which is over 200 kilometers away. Although he did meet up with his Cameroon teammates, he was omitted from the squad.
For Cameroon’s first match against Guinea, manager Rigobert Song decided to drop Onana from the squad as he arrived late. Song instead chose Fabrice Ondoa, Onana’s cousin, as the starting keeper. The match ended 1-1 with points shared.
Although the Cameroon FA had allowed Onana to play for United before traveling, so it was unlikely that he was going to start regardless. Now he will be available for his nation’s next matches with Senegal and Gambia.
Fans happy as Andre Onana was dropped
When the news of Andre Onana missing out on Cameroon’s first game due to Manchester United’s match with Tottenham Hotspurs, it faced a lot of slack. Many people said he disrespected his country by choosing to play for his club.
Many fans praised the decision to drop him from the squad for arriving late. Many criticized the keeper for choosing his club first. Others said he deserved to miss the remaining matches as he prioritized club over country.
Check out some of the fans’ reactions:
During the 2022 World Cup, Andre Onana clashed with Cameroon manager Rigobert Song, leading to his removal. Disagreements over tactics resulted in Onana’s exclusion from the Switzerland match, followed by his dismissal on disciplinary grounds after a dispute with the manager.
At his new club, Onana’s performance is a concern, conceding 47 goals in 30 matches with only 9 clean sheets. Fans worry about his ability to stop shots, often blaming him for losses.
Looking ahead, Cameroon faces Senegal on January 19th and Gambia on the 23rd. If Cameroon doesn’t advance, Onana could return for United’s next fixture on the 28th.
