Real Madrid hosts Chelsea in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals at the Santiago Bernabeu. Both teams look more than underwhelming this season after a poor campaign so far. Given the clubs’ history, they have been below expectations this season and is doubtful if either can win the competition. Chelsea has lacked a clinical presence throughout whereas Real Madrid has been inconsistent despite boasting a quality squad.
The Los Blancos, even though have qualified for the finals of the Copa del Rey have been underwhelming otherwise. They are now 13 points off the top spot and with just 10 matches remaining, it looks unlikely for a comeback. The reigning champions are inconsistent in the Spanish division won just two of their last five matches. The only hopes of silverware remain in the UCL and Copa del Rey.
Chelsea on the other hand is looking even worse. They stand in an unacceptable 11th spot vulnerable to not qualify for any European competitions. Despite spending more than half a billion on signings, their hurdles could not be overturned. The Blues look to go trophyless for a second consecutive season unless they can create a miracle in the Champions League.
Both sides have experience in winning the competition. Real Madrid is the defending champions and is the only club to have won three consecutive titles in the Champions League twice, first in 1955-56, 1956–57, 1957–58, and second in 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18. Chelsea has won their UCL trophies in the past decade.

Both sides have met each other four times where the Blues won two matches and Real Madrid won and drew one. The Los Blancos have won it 14 times which is the record for most UEFA trophies most recently in the 2021/22 season. Chelsea has two in 2012 and 2021. With an in-form Karim Benzema and the void of a striker effective in front of goal, the Blues will find the match hard to contain with.
Their latest meeting resulted in a 3-2 win for Chelsea in the second leg of the quarterfinals in the 2021-22 season. However, the Madrid outfit won on aggregate and went on to lift the cup during the tenure. This season looks completely different and with its current form, Real Madrid is the heavyweight to march on to the latter stages of the competition.

Carlo Ancelotti wouldn’t want to drop out Karim Benzema given his form netting two hattricks in two matches. Vinicius Junior also looks important for the squad whereas Chelsea will probably start with their strongest lineup despite their inconsistent performances. Both sides come with defeats in their previous match which may cause concerns about team morale.
Real Madrid predicted XI: Thibaut Courtois, Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, Luka Modric, Eduardo Camavinga, Toni Kroos, Federico Valverde, Vinicius Jr, Karim Benzema.
Chelsea predicted XI: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Reece James, Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly, Ben Chilwell, Enzo Fernandez, N’golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Raheem Sterling, Joao Felix, Kai Havertz.
