Former Tottenham boss, Mauricio Pochettino has made a surprising revelation that his ex-club ‘did not’ make any contact with him for a return, and as a result, he decided to accept a move to the London rivals Chelsea when the offer arrived.
Ahead of the ‘Clash of the Weekend’ in the Premier League, Tottenham vs. Chelsea, Mauricio Pochettino was asked about how he is feeling about returning to Tottenham after all these years. One must bear in mind that this ‘return’ is not celebratory since he is now with the rival Londoners.
To this question, Pochettino had a quite straightforward reply. He said:
I didn’t receive proposal from Spurs to return in the last year, it was never discussed. After we finished our relationship with PSG, we wanted to be one year away from football. We got contacted by Chelsea and we decided to move here.
Without a doubt what he brought to Tottenham during his five-year tenure was beyond remarkable. It was their most successful and stable period in recent history. The club achieved fifth, third, second, third, and fourth-place finishes in the league. While, also, reaching the finals of the Champions League and League Cup.
Now, as he is getting ready to cross paths with the Lillywhites, he expects a warm welcome. Nevertheless, Pochettino aims to challenge his former team and wishes his current players will regain their form.
Mauricio Pochettino admits it will be ‘strange’ to return to Tottenham
It has been 4 years since Mauricio Pochettino left Spurs. He has had a coaching experience at PSG, following his departure from England. However, he was expected to help the Fench champs to lift the Champions League but couldn’t do it. Surprisingly enough, Poch has won all 3 managerial trophies in France.
Meanwhile, now, he is all set for a return to Tottenham but as a Chelsea manager. While many expect him to get booed on by the home fans on Saturday, the Argentine himself feels differently. Ahead of the Tottenham-Chelsea game, in the pre-match conference, he addressed this and said:
It is a strange feeling to come back at Spurs after four years… but it’s gonna be a happy day. I feel Spurs can really win the league, they’re doing excellent job.
Furthermore, he also addressed the question of being the Blues’ manager despite having coached their London rivals. He said:
I said the only teams I would never manage are Arsenal and Barcelona.
Well, he is not wrong in stating this since the North London rivalry is much more coveted than the Spurs’ rivalry with Chelsea. But, it remains to be seen how the Tottenham fans react to Pochettino coaching Chelsea when the two sides face each other on Saturday.
