Mykhailo Mudryk, who signed with Chelsea Football Club for an £88 million deal in the January transfer window, has been called out for using the N-word in a video clip posted to his TikTok account. The footage, which has now been viewed by nearly 214,000 people on Tik-Tok, showed him and a friend reciting the lyrics of a song by American rapper Lil Baby.

Despite sources close to the Ukrainian winger insisting he was just repeating the lyrics, fans and campaigners alike have been quick to criticize the use of such language “irrespective of context”. His representative told The Sun that Mudryk is “deeply sorry for any offense caused” and that he “regrets his decision” and “wholeheartedly accepts it was not appropriate.”

A statement was released by the leading football anti-racism organization, ‘Kick It Out’, condemning the use of the N-word. All racial slurs, including the N-word, were universally condemned, regardless of context. It was noted that the N-word is deeply offensive and any use of this term by high-profile figures in football can only lead to alienation from the game.

Kendrick Lamar spoke out against the double standards in the music industry and demanded that if he could say one word, that word should be the N-word. Grime artist Yizzy declared that if people of white heritage used the word, they should expect a backlash. Finally, Chuck D called on all artists to cease using the N-word in their music.

Mykhailo Mudryk is not the first high profile figure to be called out for using racial slurs and he won’t be the last. It is clear that there is still a great deal of work to be done to educate people about the importance of being inclusive and not using such language.

Ultimately, while the former Shakhtar man’s apology has been accepted, it is clear that the use of such language is never acceptable no matter the context. The fans were quick to point it out and since the player’s apology, the backlash has reduced considerably. The incident will go down as one of the instances where even the past videos of a prominent personality gets dug up and criticised by the inernet.
