Chelsea Football Club has been rocked by rumors that former manager, Jose Mourinho, is looking to make a return to Stamford Bridge for a third spell. According to the Daily Mail report earlier this week, Mourinho, currently in charge of Roma, has grown frustrated with his current situation and has informed Chelsea that he would be interested in the job if a vacancy arises.

Mourinho’s previous two stints at Chelsea were very successful, winning multiple trophies including three Premier League titles, and many blues fans would welcome his return. Also, the current Chelsea manager Graham Potter has had a difficult start to his tenure at the club and has been backed by the Chelsea hierarchy, who insists that his hiring is part of a long-term plan. Potter’s job is safe for the time being but the club is concerned about the form of the team.

Mourinho has always preferred working in England and his family still lives in London, which would tempt him to return to the league. However, he does not wish to leave Roma in the middle of the campaign. His team currently sits in fifth place in Serie A, though they lack the financial means to challenge for the top spot.

Mourinho left England after being sacked by Tottenham Hostpurs shortly before his side was about to take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final in 2021. While the rumors of his return to Chelsea have caused a stir, his recent lack of success would worry the Blues management. Chelsea are also in spot of bother as they sit 10th in the league. Graham Potter’s possessional football requires patience as he has shown in Brighton and Hove Albion previously. Whether Todd Boehly would be patient after spending 600 million already, is the question.

The struggles on the pitch no do not resonate with the activities of it as the Blues of London have spent over 500 Million in transfers this season across two transfer windows and are not looking to slow down anytime soon, as they continue to negotiate deals for more players. The way Chelsea structures deals ensures they remain extremely active in the transfer market without being sanctioned. Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital Group bought Chelsea Football Club in May 2022, the club has spent well over £500 million on transfers alone.

One of the ways Chelsea is able to spend such large sums on transfers without breaking FFP is through their use of “creative financing.” This includes offering players long-term contracts, which allows the club to spread the cost of transfers over multiple seasons. This means that, while they may be spending a large amount of money in a single transfer window, they are not exceeding spending limits over several seasons, as the FFP regulations stipulate.

Another way Chelsea is able to navigate FFP is through player sales. By recouping the money through the sale of players, the club is able to keep its net transfer spend low, further staying within the FFP framework. This also allows them to bring in new players without exceeding spending limits.

Additionally, Chelsea’s willingness to let players leave the club also helps them to manage their wage bill. FFP regulations also limit the amount of money that clubs can spend on wages, and by offloading high-earning players, Chelsea can reduce their wage bill and stay within the FFP limits. Chelsea has spent more this window than all of the other teams in the top five leagues, (other than the Premier League) combined.
