Chelsea turn their attention to Brighton’s Marc Cucurella after Manchester City seem reluctant to pay his £50 million price tag
Chelsea have made contact with Brighton regarding the acquisition of versatile defender Marc Cucurella. Following the arrival of Kalidou Koulibaly, the Blues are looking for at least two more defensive additions and have been in talks with Leicester about Wesley Fofana, who is valued at £80 million.
Sources have now confirmed that Chelsea have made contact with Cucurella, whose ability to play as both a left-sided centre-back and a left-back will undoubtedly appeal to Blues manager Thomas Tuchel.
Brighton are keen to keep Cucurella and have made it clear to potential suitors that the 26-year-old will not be allowed to leave for anything less than £50 million, a figure that has stalled talks with Manchester City. City made an initial bid of £40 million, but Brighton rejected it, and the Premier League champions have yet to increase their offer, instead focusing on other possible targets.
With City’s talks stalled, Chelsea has approached both Brighton and Cucurella about the possibility of a deal, with the Seagulls reiterating their £50 million asking price.

Chelsea has looked into ways to reduce that figure, including sending young centre-back Levi Colwill in the opposite direction as a makeweight, but exchanging players is not thought to be necessary for Chelsea to pursue a deal.
On the other side of defence, talks have been held with Inter over Dutch right-back Denzel Dumfries, whose €40m price tag could prove too expensive. Both Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta are still in talks with Barcelona about a possible departure, with the La Liga club open to the duo being used to bolster a potential bid for Frenkie de Jong, who is a Manchester United target.
