Cristiano Ronaldo once almost went to jail in a massive tax evasion case

Back in 2017, Cristiano Ronaldo was accused of tax fraud worth €14.7 million between the years 2011 and 2014. He was later charged with using shell companies located outside of Spain to conceal money he made from image rights.

Playing for Juventus at the time, the forward had initially denied the accusations stating they were false. However, the now 38-year-old was found guilty as charged in 2019 which prompted multiple court visits from the Portuguese.

As the crimes were committed during Ronaldo’s tenure at Real Madrid, Spanish law dictated that first-time offenders were allowed to serve anything less than a two-year sentence under probation. This also meant that the offender will not need to go to prison.

The case was finally settled in 2019 when Ronaldo agreed to pay a fine of almost €19 million. This also meant that the Portuguese avoided a 23-month prison sentence.
