Cristiano Ronaldo was the man of the moment when he finally scored in the 90th minute. A cross from the right wing of Portugal found substitute Ignacio who gave a soft header into the path of Ronaldo who blasted the goal in. A lengthy VAR check took place to judge the validity of the goal and eventually, it was given. From the start, Portugal looked sharper. They dominated possession in the first 15 minutes and earned a couple of corners. Pepe headed a dangerous ball from a corner but was saved by Icelandic keeper Runnarsson. Iceland had a brilliant opportunity to go ahead around the 23-minute mark. Cross from the left wing was headed into the penalty area but Palsson even being unmarked fired over the bar.

Iceland had their attacks in between and used long throw-ins, but could not trouble Diogo Costa.  Cristiano Ronaldo had a headed opportunity but was saved by Runarsson’s foot. Ronaldo was deemed offside later. Gudmondsson and Finnbogasson both received a yellow card at the ending moments of the first half. The Portuguese dugout was enraged and demanded a red card for the foul by Finnbogasson, which seemed like an intentional elbow to the face of Pepe.

Both teams were going at it with the resume in play. Cristiano came really close to scoring with a header from a corner but headed above the crossbar. Portugal had many corners again at the start of the second half. Ronaldo missed another chance and was deemed offside again. Willumsson of Iceland received a yellow card and was the 3rd Icelandic player to be booked. Willumsson was again in the center of the action as he unleashed a great strike outside the penalty area but it sailed just wide. Bernardo Silva and Thorsteinssen of Iceland both were booked for a heated clash after the Portuguese was fouled and received yellow.

Iceland made their substitutions in the 75th minute. Willumsson was again in the midst of the action, as he received a second yellow card for a rash tackle and was sent off. Iceland was down to 10 men for the last 10 minutes of the match. Cristiano himself was booked for simulation a few minutes later. He scored after that. A total of 6 minutes were added to the game post-VAR check and then ended in the Portuguese Victory.
