Cristiano Ronaldo has made it clear that he wants to leave Manchester United, preferring to join a club where he can compete for trophies and play in the Champions League in his final years.
The 37-year-old also missed the first two days of pre-season training with the club, citing personal reasons, and his participation in the club’s tour of the Far East and Australia this month is uncertain. Despite the signing of Tyrell Malacia and the planned arrivals of Christian Eriksen and Frenkie de Jong, Ronaldo appears to be disappointed with the club’s lack of intent in the transfer window.
Aside from that, another factor affecting Ronaldo this season is the pay cut players have had to take as a result of the team’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.
Failure to qualify for Europe’s premier cup competition results in a 25% pay cut for players, which has reportedly irritated the Portuguese. When Ronaldo returned to Manchester United last year, he accepted a £480,000-a-week contract, but that has now been reduced to £360,000-a-week as the club prepares for Europa League football.
The club believes that despite his desire to leave, Ronaldo will remain at the club next season due to a lack of seriously interested buyers. Aside from the high salary, teams are concerned about his compatibility in teams and modern pressing systems, despite the obvious goals he brings.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich are interested in signing the Portuguese, but a deal may be difficult to complete due to the complications. If Ronaldo does not leave United, he will play in the Europa League for the first time since 2002, when he was a teenager at his first club, Sporting.
He still has one year left on his contract after signing a two-year deal last season, and United have the option to extend it for another season if they so desire. According to the Manchester Evening News, Ronaldo believes he has three or four years left at the highest level, but dressing room sources believe he will stay at the club.
