Surprisingly, Portugal coach Fernando Santos dodged questions regarding who had scored the opening goal. Bruno Fernandes has politely acknowledged that he initially believed Cristiano Ronaldo touched his cross. Despite Ronaldo sprinting in joy, FIFA decided to give Fernandes the goal.
Fernandes stated: “I don’t think it really matters who scored. My feeling at the time was that Cristiano touched the ball. I was crossing to him. I celebrated as if it had been Cristiano’s goal.” In order to avenge their quarterfinal loss in 2010, when Luis Suarez stopped a particular goal with his hand, the following penalty was missed, and the African nation lost the subsequent shootout; the Black Stars will be seeking retribution.
