On 20th January 2024, Arsenal finally had their first win of the year by beating Crystal Palace. They hadn’t won a single match since 17th December 2023, when they beat Brighton at home. Braces by Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Maghalaes, along with a strike by Leonardo Trossard, got them three vital points.
Frustrated by the loss, the Palace fans unveiled banners calling out the owners of the club. In the away end, they showcased four banners, criticizing the owners Josh Haris, David Blitzer, John Textor, Steve Parish, and Robert Franco. Another fan had also brought along their banner, with it naming the owners. As the game went on, they started chanting former manager Patrick Viera’s name.
Wasted potential. On and off the pitch, weak decisions taking us backward! No shared vision. No structured plan. Parish out, Yanks out.A banner set up by Crystal Palace fans
Palace have won only two matches in their last 13 fixtures, with them dropping to 14th with only 21 points in 21 matches. Roy Hodgson, Palace’s manager, went personally to the away end of the Emirates to apologize to the fans. Eberechi Eze had also gone to the fans to apologize.
With the poor form, Hodgson’s future at the club looked bleak. With the club managing only one point per game, the owners look to replace him soon. Many reports have suggested Steve Cooper could be his successor, with him recently being sacked by Nottingham Forest. Graham Potter is also a viable option, with him even attending the match.
Fans laud Crystal Palace faithful for taking a stand against owners
Many users on Twitter praised the Palace fans for their strong banner against owners. Some admitted that the owners made a mistake in signing Patrick Viera, under whom Palace were growing and improving. More called out for the sacking of Roy Hodgson due to their poor form.
Here are some of the fans’ reactions:
Arsenal, after three consecutive losses to Fulham, West Ham, and Liverpool due to scoring struggles, bounced back with a 5-0 win, showing signs of improvement. This victory, their best in the season so far, boosts their confidence. Next, they face Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace will host Sheffield United in their upcoming match.
