Argentina captain Lionel Messi scored the opening goal in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final against France. After Ousmane Dembele tripped Angel Di Maria in the box which awarded Argentina the penalty, Messi scored emphatically against France captain Hugo Lloris to give Argentina the lead.

This makes Messi the first player in history to score in every stage of the FIFA World Cup tournament. The mercurial attacker adds another accolade to his long list of achievements as his team battle to win football’s premier competition. Messi scored against all his opponents barred from Poland in which Messi missed a penalty.

Twitter reacted as many rejoiced on Messi scoring his first finals goal with what could be one decisive moment of the game. While others pointed out the penalty was too soft to be awarded on such a big stage, some also went as far as labeling the World Cup to be ‘rigged’ for Messi to win in his last dance.
