Erling Haaland, Manchester City‘s star forward is no stranger to goals. Be it the Premier League or the UEFA Champions League, the Norwegian has faced no difficulty in terms of finding the net. The 23-year-old’s goalscoring exploits helped him reach yet another milestone as he became both the youngest and fastest player to reach 40 goals in Europe’s top club competition. His goal against RB Leipzig on Tuesday meant that the player overtook Kylian Mbappe to claim the record.

His explosive goalscoring form at Manchester City helped him attain the record of the fastest player to score 20, 30 and 40 goals as well. He did the same in 14, 25 and 35 games respectively. It is surprising to note that Kylian Mbappe scored 40 Champions League goals in 59 matches, almost 24 games more than the Norwegian. The previous record was held by Ruud van Nistelrooy, who did the same in 45 appearances.

Subsequently, the Norwegian also surpassed Kylian Mbappe as the youngest to reach the 40-goal mark. The Frenchman earlier held the record at 23 years and 316 days, beating Lionel Messi, who was 24 years and 130 days old while attaining the same.

His 40 goals are spread across three clubs – Red Bull Salzburg (8), Borussia Dortmund (15) and Manchester City (17).

The 23-year-old has often been compared to PSG star Kylian Mbappe. Subsequently, many used the record to prove that Haaland has surpassed the Frenchman in the debate.

Others were even convinced that he would surpass Cristiano Ronaldo‘s record in the UCL. Some even went so far as to say that Haaland is better than Messi and Ronaldo ‘ever were’. Haaland has already scored 5 goals in this year’s Champions League for Manchester City.

Some took the record-breaking moment to remind fans that he is also the fastest player to reach 50 Premier League and Bundesliga goals as well. Some Messi and Ronaldo fans said that the Argentine’s 91-goal record and Ronaldo’s 17-goal record in the UCL are safe. Only time will tell, as Erling Haaland shows no sign of stopping under Pep Guardiola.
