On the Bundesliga’s final day, Borussia Dortmund suffered a meltdown for the ages to hand Bayern Munich their 11th consecutive German top-flight title. Dortmund failed to beat mid-table Mainz at home, while Bayern won dramatically away at Cologne.
There was plenty of chaos as it unfolded, however. Bayern Munich went ahead early thanks to a goal from Kingsley Coman, which was a sign of things to come. Dortmund was two-nil down, seemingly suffering from stage fright after an atrocious first half. To add to the commotion, though, there was drama in Cologne.
FC Koln was on the front foot, threatening the Bayern penalty area before the game was suddenly halted as two sprinkler heads burst out of the turf and started spraying water about. The commentators joked it was necessary since it might’ve helped cool the players down on an intense final day.
However, the team that needed a cooling effect was Borussia Dortmund. In a frantic and incoherent display, they were held firm by Mainz’s unbelievably deep block. Many wonder if they will ever get a better chance to disrupt Bayern’s domestic dominance.

Thomas Tuchel talks about Bayern Munich’s title victory
The media questioned Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel following the club’s dramatic Bundesliga win. The German was appointed head coach two months ago and was criticised for failing to perform in the UEFA Champions League and the DFB Pokal.
Tuchel would certainly be relieved after getting his hands on silverware for the first time as Bayern manager. He gave the media his opinion on how the day’s events unfolded. “The game describes this phase I’ve gone through as a manager. We had a good grip on the game and we had the chance to score another goal. But we didn’t and we lost control due to individual mistakes. Then we tried to run down the clock.”
The Bundesliga title victory is Tuchel’s third league win, finishing top with Paris Saint-Germain in 2018/19 and 2019/20. He also won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, crowning him as the German Manager of the Year in 2021.
