“Vini owns Liverpool; Most Chaotic goal”- Fans express joy as Karim Benzema’s goal takes Real Madrid to Champions League quarterfinals

Real Madrid progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after a 1-0 win in a Round of 16 second-leg tie at the Santiago Bernabeu. Karim Benzema scored the only goal of the game in the 80th minute after some poor Liverpool defending. The Spanish club won 6-2 on aggregate, largely due to the result at Anfield and progressed comfortably to the quarter-finals.

Liverpool arrived hoping to overturn the first-leg deficit, but it was not to be. The Reds created very little in a poor showing, and most of their threat came from half-chances. Real, meanwhile, looked sharper and a class above.

The first half was quite entertaining, despite the absence of goals. Alisson stopped a shot by Vinicius Jr. from close range, and Diogo Jota fumbled a good opportunity minutes later. The game opened up with Eduardo Camavinga firing a shot against the crossbar and Luka Modric unleashing a rocket that almost went in. Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo tested Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with fierce attempts, but the Belgian stood firm.

Both teams found space behind throughout the game. Federico Valverde thought he could give Madrid the lead, but Alisson came out quickly to block him. Nunez was in acres of space on the other end, but Mohamed Salah’s poor pass execution meant a chance went to waste. Both Valverde and Karim Benzema had great opportunities to give Real the lead. However, neither of them could keep their efforts on target.

Karim Benzema finally gave Real Madrid the lead in the 80th minute. He tucked the ball into an empty net after Vinicius flicked the ball across the goal. Liverpool brought on Roberto Firmino, Harvey Elliott and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain to turn their fortunes around, but to no avail.

Real Madrid will now prepare for Sunday’s El Clasico, hoping to close the gap at the top of La Liga to just six points. A loss in the fixture will mean the club from the capital will have little to no chance of winning the title. Liverpool, meanwhile, has a two-week break before travelling to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City. The Reds are 6th in the table, only three points clear of 9th-placed Fulham.
