Manchester City fans may have just dug their own grave. The defending Premier League champions were up against Everton on Wednesday, as Pep Guardiola and co. picked up their 2nd win in their last 5 league games. As the two sides battled it out at Goodison Park, Manchester City fans had some harsh words for the home side. Chants along the lines of ‘You cheating b*stards, you know what you are’ have caused outrage on social media.
Pep Guardiola and co. found themselves trailing against Everton half an hour into the game. But much to the relief of Cityzens, Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez, and Bernardo Silva inspired a comeback in the second half. The win ensures that Manchester City does not fall behind in the race for the Premier League, having endured a poor run of form in recent games.
It was only a month ago that the league deducted ten points from Everton for breaching profit and sustainability rules. It was under this precedent that Manchester City fans hounded their opposition with ‘cheater’ labels.
However, the internet has taken notice that City are no better themselves. An alleged 115 breaches under false financial reports are looming over the club.
Fans react to Manchester City fans calling Everton ‘cheaters’
Manchester City are comfortably the most successful English club in recent times. However, they haven’t been able to do so without significant scrutiny in terms of finances and management. The club has splurged on several players in the transfer market and has also received backlash for the same. The 115 charges dating back from the 2009/10 season were targeted by rival fans.
A fan commented that City fans chanting ‘cheaters’ was as hypocritical as can be. Meme templates featuring one searching for themselves were spammed in the comments section. Others believe that Everton’s recent points deduction has caved the minds of City fans and that they will also receive punishment soon. The 115 branches did not help in dampening the digs made in the replies.
As it stands, Manchester City are fourth in the Premier League with 37 points in 18 games. Everton on the other hand, are battling relegation and are currently 17th in the table. If not for the point deduction, Everton would have been above Chelsea, in tenth spot. Manchester City take on Sheffield United as Everton face Wolves on matchday 20.
